After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xinjiang's industrial development surged, but there was a shortage of oil. Yiqikelike, located in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwestern China, was the site of the first oil field discovery in the Tarim Basin. In 1957, over 10,000 oil workers from across the country gathered here.
