Japan-China relations: Sometimes difficult but always indispensable

"As neighbors separated by only a narrow body of water, both Japan and China inevitably face challenges that may sometimes look insurmountable. It is crucial, however, for us to manage these outstanding issues effectively and preventing them from negatively affecting the overall relationship. We endeavor to enhance cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries and for the international community. Japan and China share a relationship that is sometimes difficult but always indispensable to each other," Kanasugi Kenji, Japanese ambassador to China, said during his speech titled "The Future of Japan-China Relations" at the Renmin University of China (RUC), June 10.

Japan and China vital to regional peace

Kanasugi was appointed as Japanese ambassador to China at the end of 2023. In the past year and a half, he has travelled to 18 cities across 10 provinces and four municipalities, experiencing firsthand the cultures and landscapes of each region. As ambassador, he has dedicated to promoting a more stable and mutually

beneficial Japan-China relationship. He said, "As major economic powers with global significance, Japan and China play vital roles in promoting peace and development in the region and the world, transcending our bilateral relations."

Sentiment between two peoples key to Japan-China relations

Kanasugi is frank to address challenges facing the relations. He believes the most difficult aspect of current Japan-China relations is the "sentiment between the two peoples." There are some negative perceptions that linger in Japan regarding China, and vice versa. This situation cannot be easily remedied overnight. "Yet, what is imperative is to make steady progress, addressing concrete challenges one by one, and proactively promoting practical cooperation. Let us not forget to make continuous efforts to advance Japan-China relations," the ambassador added.

China, America, both vitally important to Japan

With regard to the relations among Japan, China and the United States, Kanasugi said, "The United States is Japan's only ally, China is Japan's largest trading partner. Both are vitally important to Japan, and there is no "panacea" for ensuring a smooth relationship with either. What is best is to maintain broad communication both with China and with the United States and to make our best efforts for stable relationships with both."
