The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a French-circulated resolution for a police deployment to Burundi. The African country has been embroiled in political violence since President Pierre Nkurunziza said last April he would seek a third term.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will now hold talks with the Burundian government and African Union on the proposed international presence, before presenting options to the Security Council.

"This resolution request the Secretary General to propose to the Security Council options for a United Nations police presence in Burundi and this within 15 days. The objective here is also to back the African Union, which has deployed observers to Burundi," said Francois Delattre, France ambassador to the United Nations.

The resolution said the deployment will enhance the UN's capacity to monitor the security situation. It will also promote the respect of human rights and advance rule of law in Burundi. It urges the Burundi government and all parties to reject any kind of violence and condemn any public statement inciting violence or hatred.

Protests and post-election violence have reportedly killed more than 400 people, and forced more than 240,000 people to flee into neighboring countries.
