China is undertaking a water diversion project along the Lancang-Mekong River, to help Southeast Asian countries suffering from droughts. The first stage of the water diversion project finished on the 10th April. A second stage has now begun. The issue was discussed at length during the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders' Meeting, held on the 23rd of March in Sanya. Cambodia is one of the countries benefiting from the scheme.

"In consideration of drought resistance requirements from countries based downstream along the Lancang-Mekong River, China launched the second stage of its water diversion project on the 11th of April, which will stay in place until the end of the dry season. Water levels will be adjusted according to the upstream situation and requirements of each country. Water conservancy facilities will mitigate the influence of droughts and floods. China will continue to strengthen cooperation with countries along Lancang-Mekong River, to fight against extreme weather and protect water resources," said Lu Kang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.
