Both the country's urban and rural areas continue to age. There are now more than 220 million Chinese people over the age of sixty. In less than 10 years, the figure will hit 300 million. By 2050, it's anticipated that 1/4 of China's population will be older than 65.
It's also estimated that by 2030, there will be more than 120 million over the age of 80, compared with just 20 million now. This will pose a huge problem for elderly care in China, as the country is running with a huge deficit of long-term nurses, they need about 10 million more.
The country is now running the "9073" guideline to care for the those advanced in age. It means that 90 percent of the population stay at home, 7 percent should receive help from the community. And 3 percent of them are looked after by an institution.
