China lose to Netherlands 2:3 in Olympic women' s volleyball opener

We're now back in Beijing to check in one of China's most popular teams at the Olympics, the women's volleyball squad. The PRC ladies are the reigning World Cup Champions and one of the favourites to capture the gold in Rio. First up for them in Group B was the Netherlands who are back in the Games after a 20 year absence and were not expected to provide too much trouble for the Chinese.

But Lang Ping's side would get off to a rough start losing the first set 25-23 but then turning things around to claim the second 25-21.

China would remain in charge in the third set, and led by Zhu Ting and Xu Yunli, they would take it 25-18.

But the Netherlands would mount a surprise comeback to win the fourth 25-22 then claim the decider 15-13 to upset the Chinese 3-2.

That means the Dutch now top Group B with two points while China still come away with one point. Next up for the Chinese is Italy on Monday.

PRC women's football team wins second Group E match

We move to the pitch for football where the China's women's team took on South Africa in their second Group E match. The Steel Roses open the scoring near the end of the first half when Gu Yasha receives a pass from Wang Shuang and fires it home.

In the 88th minute, Tan Ruyin adds a second goal for China with a shot from 44 meters out and the final score would be 2-0. China face Sweden on Tuesday.

The victory moves the Chinese into third place in Group E with one win and one loss. Brazil remain on the top with 3 points while Sweden are second on goal difference.

American men win first Group A basketball game in blow out

It would be a rough start for the China's men on the basketball court as they were blown away by the defending champions USA who rolled to a 119-62 victory in Group A.

The Americans were led by Kevin Durant, who scored 25 points, while Demarcus Cousins chipped in 17 points and five-rebounds.

China were paced by former NBA player Yi Jianlian who poured in 25 points.

That leaves the US on top of Group A. Next up for the Dream Team is Venezuela with similar results expected. China are fourth in the standings and will face France on Monday.

PRC lose Group B opener in women's basketball

The Chinese women also took the court for their basketball opener against Canada in Group B. The PRC took their only lead of the game when Li Shashan hit a three pointer to begin the contest.

Canada used fast-breaks to take a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They dominated from there and led by as many as 26 points before closing it out 90-68.

Canada now sit on the top of Group B with 2 points, followed by China with one. Next up for the Chinese will be Serbia on Monday.
