The Chinese women's football team were in action. The Steel Roses had a win and a loss in their opening two Group A matches, and needed a good result in their final match to secure a spot in the knock-out stage. Their opponents, Sweden were in the same situation.

The teams would play cautiously and as a result no goals would be scored. The 0-0 draw means both nations qualify for the Quarter-finals. China will meet Germany on Friday for a berth in the semis.

In tennis Serena Williams, the defending champion and heavy favourite to repeat would fall to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina. The world number twenty wins in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Williams also lost in doubles with sister Venus, and has decided not to play mixed doubles, so her Rio stay is now over.

The top men's player also had a difficult time in Brazil, as Novak Djokovic, who fell in the singles opening round, is now out of the doubles. The Serb, and playing partner Nenad Zimonjic losing in straight sets to Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo from the host nation.

In men's rugby 7s, favourites New Zealand were shocked 14-12 by Japan in a scene reminiscent of the Asians big win over South Africa at last year's rugby world cup. The All-Blacks also lost star Sonny Bill Williams for the tournament with an ankle injury.

And an update to Kosovo's first ever gold medalist. Maljinda Kelmendi was facing possible punishment over skipping a drug test before the Games. Well judo's governing body says she was ok to refuse that test in France, and took an additional test the following week. Chances are she will not face any punishment.
