Six scientists have simulated life on Mars on a Hawaiian volcano. The scientists lived in a 93-square meter solar-powered dome for the past year. They ventured out only for simulated spacewalks fully attired in mock spacesuits.

The experiment is the fourth and longest so far in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation or HI-SEAS, funded by NASA and overseen by the University of Hawaii.

The project aims to create guidelines for future manned missions to Mars. The crew members will leave the mockup Mars habitat on Sunday.
