Chinese President Xi Jinping has just wrapped up a state visit to Bangladesh.

As the head of the world's second largest economy, President Xi Jinping's trip to Bangladesh was met with high praise and a warm welcome.

He is the first Chinese head of state to visit the South Asian country in 30 years, and was welcomed by his counterpart Abdul Hamid at Dhaka International Airport.

Both countries already enjoy close ties in infrastructure cooperation  and on this visit, President Xi aimed to deepen relations.

"Both China and Bangladesh have agreed to launch a feasibility study on a China-Bangladesh Free Trade Zone to strengthen trade and investment cooperation and strengthen practical cooperation in key areas such as production capacity, energy and power, transportation, communication and agriculture," said Xi.

Bangladesh is in a strategic location in China's revived Silk Road plan, which aims to connect countries and markets in Asia, Europe and Africa.

After meeting with Bangladesh's prime minister, the two leaders witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements worth billions of dollars in infrastructure and energy.

Agreements were also signed with efforts to tackle extremism and climate change.

"China is ready to work with Bangladesh to move along the path of development as friends and partners who trust and support each other, and add more substance to the China-Bangladesh strategic partnership," said Xi.

Xi said Bangladesh is an important country in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

With bilateral diplomatic ties established 41 years ago, the healthy and smooth development will bring practical benefits to both peoples.
