In South Korea, the stage is set for an impeachment vote against President Park Geun-hye. Opposition parties in control of parliament have formally introduced a motion for impeachment and a vote is expected on Friday.

There are already nearly two hundred members from the opposition and independent parties who are lined up to vote in favor of the bill. And now even a few dozen members of Park’s ruling party are said to vote her out as well. That would make modern South Korea’s first ever female president the first to be impeached.

If the vote succeeds, Park’s duties will be handed to the prime minister while the country’s supreme court evaluates the constitutionality of the impeachment bill. It would also bring an end to a truly bizarre scandal that has all but paralyzed South Korean politics. Massive protests have gridlocked Seoul week after week.

Park has been accused of working in the thrall of a childhood friend, Choi Soon-sil, who is the daughter herself of an infamous cult leader. Park is suspected of having aided Choi in her own corruption scandal.

Park admitted to giving Choi access to government decision making and she offered to resign in April but South Korea’s parliament has rejected that offer. They want to see her removed by a vote.
