India launches 104 satellites in single space mission

02-15-2017 14:25 BJT

India has successfully launched one hundred and four satellites in a single mission from the spaceport of Sriharikota in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. This is a world record of launching the most satellites at one go.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle carries a 700 kilogram main satellite for earth observation and 103 smaller "nano satellites", which weigh a combined 660 kilograms.

Nearly all the nano satellites are from other countries, including Israel, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates. 96 are from the United States. The business of putting commercial satellites into space for profit is growing. India is competing with other international players for a greater share of that launch market, and is known for its low-cost space program.
