Ang Lee plans to return to the new filmmaking technology he used for "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk," despite critics' mixed reaction to the results. The double Oscar-winning director defended his choice as he promoted his adaptation of Ben Fountain's 2012 novel about a young soldier sent home from Iraq to take part in a victory tour, who becomes a reluctant mascot for an unpopular war.

Ang Lee shot "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" in 3D, 4K resolution, at 120 frames-per-second. That's five times the traditional 24 frames per second. After the film premiered at the New York Film Festival in October, it received mixed reviews from critics, with some feeling that the technology distracted from the film.

The 62-year old director seemed unfazed by the criticism, but calls for audiences to watch with an open mind.

"I think it's a lot to take in. I don't think we should make up our minds yet because it's something that just beginning. To me, I've been going after this for years, merely the format, it's two years. I think it's a legitimately good format for artists' expression. It's just begining. We ought to give it some time, give it consideration, allow ourselves. I certainly did. Invest ourselves into it, see what happen," he said.

Speaking in Taiwan, he reflected on the current trend for Chinese investment into Hollywood. Lee is hoping this rush of new money will bring something fresh to the film industry.

"I hope the effect is a positive reinforcement. It brings freshness because they're still people who have a lot of dreams. Hollywood has become the studio system has become quiet corporate, really lacks energy, fresh energy. I hope their investment brings something new," he said.

Some might have hoped Chinese investment might also bring Hollywood diversity. As Hollywood is gearing up for the awards season, Lee says he is looking forward to a more diverse and well represented Academy Awards - but believes that filmmakers should let their work speak for themselves.

"You make the best movie possible. I don't think about (diversity) very much, to be honest with you. I think it's important that we make good movies that influence people's lives, inspiring people (that) they can take from the movie. I think the movies will speak for themselves. That's what I believe in. I think things will naturally change. What happened is history, you don't flip history overnight. But you have to keep doing your work and that naturally will push things, will make the change. That's what I believe in," Ang Lee said.

"Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" hits theaters in China on November 11th.
