Japanese media say the country's livestock and agriculture industries will suffer as a result of TPP, which will take effect soon. Kyodo News Agency says new quotas will be set for duty-free imports as TPP comes into effect. Many farmers are afraid of what this means to their livelihood.

"Japan has an oversupply of locally-produced rice. Farmers are cutting production because rice prices are also dropping. They can hardly sustain their production. With the TPP, more rice will be imported into our market, and that will be a big blow to Japanese farmers," a farmer from Sendai City said.

"Prime Minister Abe promised to protect us but I don't feel that we're going to be protected at all," one cow farmer said.

"TPP is coming into force and there's nothing I can do about it. I hope someone will figure out a way to cope with it. Generally the deal is not good for us," another cow farmer said.
