Afghans on one-candidate election

2009-11-02 19:45 BJT

Afghanistan's presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah has announced he will not participate in the November 7th run-off election, as government and election officials have not met his demands for a fair vote. Around the country, there's been a mixed reaction to his announcement.

Despite doubts about the practicality of a one-candidate run-off, some Afghans believe the election is important for upholding the constitution.

A Kabul resident said, "It doesn't matter if Doctor Abdullah participates or not, it should take place.  Because the Afghan constitution tells us the second round should take place."

And it's not just ordinary people who feel this way.

Shukria Barekzei, Afghan Parliament member, said, "What is really important is the legitimacy of the next government, it should come from the people of Afghanistan according to our constitution."

Others say both candidates should stop struggling for power.  Instead, they should work for the country's stability.

President Hamid Karzai's camp has ruled out a coalition with Abdullah.

This has dashed hopes for a way out of the impasse.

The government-appointed Independent Election Commission says the constitution means the second run-off must go ahead, with the winner already known.
