China's Wang Yi has attended the second foreign ministers' meeting under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework in Siem Reap in Cambodia. The framework's purpose is to coordinate action between the six countries along the Mekong River, known as the Lancang in China.
Wang Yi says the cooperation framework is complementary with other frameworks in the region, and is playing an active part in leading and promoting other mechanisms.
"First, the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation is more down to earth. It was tailor made for the six countries and perfectly fits with the needs of the six countries. It focuses on bringing tangible interests and welfare for the people of the six countries. Second, it values more on taking actions. The framework is project based and results and efficiently oriented."
"It seeks to reduce as many unnecessary procedures and meetings as possible, and through consolidating specific projects endeavors to achieve tangible results for the development of the sub region. Third, it focuses more on comprehensiveness. So far, various kinds of Mekong River mechanisms have focused just on one area, but the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation not only stresses economic, trade and infrastructure cooperation, but also covers political and security cooperation and people-to-people exchanges."
"Therefore the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation is more conducive in connecting with the construction of the ASEAN community, in comprehensively enhancing the level of cooperation of the Lancang-Mekong," Wang Yi said.
