Official: National plan to boost long-term growth of Hainan

Officials say plans to push Hainan up to international standards should benefit long-term growth on the island. But they also say it's vital to plan ahead and keep a close eye on development.

Wei Liucheng, Secretary of CPC Hainan Provincial Committee said "We are trying to promote overall development of Hainan Island. Hainan Island will become more open and globalized, while improving our construction, equipment, management, and service sectors. We've learned a lot from famous tourist destinations. Allowing travellers from 26 countries to enter and stay in Hainan for 3 weeks without a visa should help promote tourism. But we also want to monitor the speed of development on the island, since we have not forgotten the collapse of the real estate sector in 1993. Real estate will continue to be a mainstay industry, but we must plan ahead to ensure it develops at a proper speed."
