Special Report: Afghan presidential election |
Voters will choose their next president and, in doing so, help shape their future.
The election is the second since the Taliban were toppled in 2001. It's a test to measure the level of political progress.
It will also help bring major issues to the spotlight, such as security, socio-economic development, governance and drug control.
Security forces are on high alert, as car bombs and rocket attacks have killed 14 people since Saturday.
The Taliban have promised to derail the process. The latest polls show incumbent President Hamid Karzai leading a field of 33 candidates.
Analysts say the strongest competition will come from former foreign minister Ab-dullah Ab-dullah.
